Succeeding in the International Arena

Course Overview

A 1 1/2 - 2 hour workshop or half day summit  (Curriculum options are below.)

The single greatest barrier to business success is one erected by culture.
— Edward T. Hall, renowned anthropologist, researcher, and scholar

Are you world ready? Globalize your interactions with international business etiquette. Culture hides more than what it reveals. Being intuitive to different communication styles, cues, taboos, and personality types empowers you to forge stronger relationships and have a distinct advantage in business and social situations. This cultural awareness helps you to know if you have offended, pleased, amused, or caused your foreign counterpart to "lose face".  Many negotiations and business deals have been lost to those who were unaware of the importance of intercultural communication. Whether you’re traveling abroad or working for a global company, this intelligence will open doors. Represent yourself with cultural competency as a refined world-class citizen.

Ninety percent (90%) of leading executives from 68 countries identified that the top management challenge for the 21st century is CROSS-CULTURAL LEADERSHIP.
— Economist Intelligence Unit survey

Did you know that some cultures may show respect by avoiding eye contact? Or 'cultural difference' may explain why you don't receive quick email replies from those in Asia? Or why someone from India may stand closer to you? Or how two hands are used to exchange business cards and never your left hand? Or how some cultures would never say "no" to you because fostering group harmony and avoiding confrontation is more important to them?

At CELI, we do more than just teach a list of etiquette dos and don'ts of each culture. We want our clients to ask WHY a behavior or expectation is important to that culture by considering the cultural layers: History, Religion, Ethnicity, Education, Region, Gender, and Generation. Thereafter, further layers should be 'peeled' away when striving to understand a multicultural work environment. These deeper layers include: Country, Industry, Organization, Team, and finally, the Individual.

CELI instructors highlight the 5 Key Dimensions of Culture which pinpoints how your communication style compares to another culture's communication preference. We inspire you to be inquisitive and ask if others are from a high-context or a low-context culture, which reveals a great deal about a person. Strategies are taught to close the cultural gaps and to adapt your verbal and nonverbal actions appropriately to avoid misinterpretations and negative judgments. Learning the WHY behind cultural differences and the techniques to adapt accordingly breaks down global barriers and builds prosperous, long-term relationships.

The length of time for this training session may be adjusted to meet client preferences.
